Perfume shopping in Calgary

Need to replenish your classic perfume? Or are you looking for a new niche fragrance? Here, seven Calgary stores that cater to scent lovers.

Parfum Gallerie

In this perfume-launch-a-minute world, it’s comforting to know a guaranteed shop where you can pick up your go-to classic and this pretty little boutique, tucked away in the bustling Bankers hall downtown, has all your favourites. Think Joy by Jean Patou, Eau du Givenchy and the majority of the collection of fragrances from Guerlain. For men, Gucci, Hugo Boss and Creed are some of the top sellers. 315 8 Ave. SW #332, www.parfumgallerie.ca

Gravity Pope

Located on Calgary’s fashionable 17th Avenue S.W., this recently relocated shop is a popular spot for one-of-a-kind premium perfume brands including a carefully curated collection of unisex fragrances from Comme des Garcons, such as Wonderoud and Dover Street Market, as well as a full line up of women’s perfumes, soaps, bath salts, and creams from Santa Maria Novella, a nearly 800-year-old farmacia in Florence. 1126 17 Ave. SW, www.gravitypope.com

Modern Duke

Although more of a home furnishings store, Modern Duke is a haven of style, located in Mount Royal Village. It caters to those who want classic contemporary furnishings and stocks a variety of Santa Maria Novella’s women’s fragrances, men’s colognes, bath lines, rose water, and foot and hand cream. The store is also the exclusive distributor for Aerin Lauder  furniture, accessories, candles and lighting. Make sure to check out Santa Maria Novella’s pretty, clean Angels of Florence scent: It’s a best-seller—and a percentage of all sales go to restoring the monuments of the iconic city. 808 16 Ave. SW, www.modernduke.com

Kent of Inglewood

Every city needs a place where a man can get an axe, a straight razor and a signature scent. According to store manager Nathan Gareau of Kent of Inglewood, “this is a 100-year-old shop that opened a year ago and the refinement of British goods just seems to fit.” Located in the city’s up-and-coming Inglewood neighbourhood, the shop carries a number of hard-to-find British brands for men and women including Jermyn Street from Floris, Dark Rose by Czech and Speake, and a phenomenal Vetiver by Castle Forbes. 1319 9 Ave. SE, www.kentofinglewood.com

04_NealsYardRemediesNeal’s Yard Remedies

Also synonymous with London England, Neal’s Yard Remedies, exclusive to Calgary, is known predominantly for its organic based beauty and skincare lines. However, it does carry two Eau de Parfums, No.1 Frankincense and No.2 Rose, which are both 97 per cent organic and 100 per cent natural. Or if you prefer, create your own artisanal aroma with a selection of the shop’s in-house natural oils. #130-2207 4th St. SW and 6A, 100 Anderson Road SE, www.nealsyardremedies.ca

DaDe Art Gallery

A combination of art gallery and home décor store, DaDe Gallery has recently picked up eight unisex fragrances from Paris’s Olfactive Studio. Each fragrance has been exclusively crafted with a particular photograph in mind. Panorama, Still Life, and Ombre Indigo are some of the latest innovations. 1327 9 Ave. SE, www.dadeartanddesignlab.com

06_Less17Less 17

One of the newest additions to 17th Avenue S.W., this men’s wear shop is one of the few stores in Calgary to stock niche brands, such as Taylor of Old Bond Street and Portland General Store. With an emphasis on all natural renewable ingredients and names like Wood, Whiskey, and Tobacco, it’s no wonder Portland General Store’s fragrances are the scent of choice for high-style men about town. 930 17 Ave. SW, www.lessoneseven.com

Karen Ashbee is a freelance writer, certified dressage judge, rider and consultant for her husband’s business. Although La Perla has been her signature scent for over twenty years she does admit for having a fondness for ‘eau du barn.’ Nothing like the woodsy aroma of fresh shavings combined with the smell of saddle soap.
