Fresh

The Whale & The Rose defines fragrances according to one or more of nine fragrance families: Aromatic, Citrus, Floral, Fresh, Fruity, Gourmand, Green, Oriental and Woody. Think of a Fresh fragrance as one with a light and breezy personality. It’s crisp—even refreshing! It can be fresh via notes of fresh-cut grass or fresh leaves. It often contains citrus notes as well. Fresh can also mean freshly washed, so this interpretation of fresh is more akin to the smell of fresh laundry or even baby powder. Increasingly, there is overlap between the families of scent. Many modern-day perfumes, for example may contain ingredients or notes that allow them to be classified within more than one fragrance family: For instance, a fresh scent can be a fresh-floral, so it combines green notes of ivy and grass with geranium, rose or magnolia; or imagine a fresh-aromatic, with green notes combined with coriander and musk. Fresh-citrus scents can be doubly invigorating: Think green notes swirling alongside zesty lime or mandarin.
