2013 Canadian Fragrance Awards: And the winners are…

Lady Gaga’s black-hued perfume Fame, and Calvin Klein’s woody-spicy Encounter (fronted by actor Alexander Skarsgård), took home the Consumers’ Choice Award in the women’s and men’s categories respectively at last night’s seventh-annual staging of the Canadian Fragrance Awards by Cosmetics Magazine at the Marriott Chateau Champlain in Montreal.

The choice of Fame and Encounter illustrate the judges’ and the zeitgeist’s love of scents and ideas that pay homage to perfume’s rich past while rethinking that history with modern-day thinking. That held true whether an award celebrated a perfume that was inspired by an iconic city—as in Chanel’s Venice-loving Coco Noir, which won in the Best Limited Launch in the women’s category—or it was the acknowledgement of a new kind of interactive beauty magazine—The Whale & The Rose took home the award for Best Broadcast/Web Media Editorial for our high-service Fragrance Buying Guide feature.

Yes, it was an industry event, but dear readers, if you’re in the market for a new spritz, you really can’t go wrong with any of the winners of this year’s awards.

Her long-held love of fragrance led her to launch The Whale & The Rose, a destination for all things perfume-related. Now, when she indulges in a crazy-expensive bottle of fragrance, she can do so guilt-free. Well almost. It’s all in the name of research after all.
