Pop the bubbly!

Pop the bubbly!

By Ashley Kowalewski

The bubbly sweetness that is oh so tingly on your tongue and synonymous with tonight’s festivities inspires us. After all, why should champagne be solely for our sipping pleasure? It can be for perfuming, too.

We looked for sparkling scents—not to worry, you won’t smell as though you’ve just climbed out of a vat of vino—and their bright, light and fruity notes that channel the effervescence of an iconic flute of New Year’s Eve cheer.

So go ahead, spritz away. We think you’ll be the life of the party!

Chanel No.5. Uncork this iconic scent for the New Year’s Eve occasion. With its sparkling aldehydes and its signature and much-copied meld of neroli, ylang ylang, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver and vanilla notes, it would be a sophisticated way to ring in 2013. $110 (100 ml), www.chanel.com

Demeter Champagne Brut. This toilette takes crisp and fruity Dom Pérignon as inspiration and then adds a jigger more sweetness to counter the beverage’s dryness for a more approachable and perfume-appropriate scent. $15 (30 ml), www.demeterfragrance.com

Victoria’s Secret VS Fantasies Strawberries & Champagne Fragrance Mist. If you like your New Year’s Eve with a flirty dose of sequins and pink lipgloss, this sparkly sweet spritz is just for you. Perfect for those who prefer to pop rosé at midnight. $12 (250 ml), www.victoriassecret.com

Fresh Citron de Vigne Eau de Parfum. Fresh taps the vineyard to define this perfume. Crisp top notes of neroli, bitter orange and pink grapefruit evolve into an intriguing middle ground laced with a pinot noir accord, jasmine tea leaves and lemongrass; while base notes of patchouli, sandalwood and amber provide a warm, wearable and sultry base. $32 (30 ml), www.fresh.com

Gucci Première Eau de Parfum. Imagine Marilyn or Marlene in floor-length black and diamonds, with quiet jazz playing in the background. Sparkling notes of bergamot and orange blossom kick-start this glamorous spritz; white flowers, musk, leather, and wood round out its multi-faceted personality. $108 (50 ml), www.gucci.com

Happy New Year! May 2013 be absolutely scent-sational.

Her long-held love of fragrance led her to launch The Whale & The Rose, a destination for all things perfume-related. Now, when she indulges in a crazy-expensive bottle of fragrance, she can do so guilt-free. Well almost. It’s all in the name of research after all.
