Fragrances of the fashion crowd

Fragrances of the fashion crowd

By Deborah Fulsang

’Tis the season for Canadian runway news as global fashion show producer IMG stages the Spring-Summer 2013 ready-to-wear collections in Toronto. But off the catwalk, there were other trends to write home about too. We asked more than a dozen style insiders about what fragrance they’re choosing to wear with their most au courant fashions. Here, they share:

1. Jeanne Beker, International Fashion Expert: “Not sure I’m sticking with the same fragrance all week, but last night I wore Dior’s J’Adore. It’s distinctive and glam and always speaks of haute fashion to me—everything I hope our own Fashion Week smacks of!”

2. Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-Chief of Fashion Magazine: “I will be wearing my new favourite—Balenciaga Florabotanica. I am in love with it! I can’t tell you why—it’s a totally primal connection.”

3. Susan Langdon, Executive Director of The Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI): “E. Condray Jacinthe Et Rose Body Lotion. I like body cream for scent because some perfumes make me sneeze.”
4. Desia Brill, owner fashion PR firm Brill Communications: “Always Calvin Klein Euphoria.”

5. George Antonopoulos, creative director of Object and fashion director for Arthur Mendonca: “Tom Ford Black Orchid.”

6. Sarah Casselman, Senior Editor of Fashion News for Fashion Magazine: “Miss Dior Cherie Eau de Parfum: It’s the perfect ladylike scent—day or night. It’s not overpowering, not overly sweet, and it’s on the lighter side. Burberry Brit is another one on my dressing table. And I’ve worn Flowerbomb for awhile too.”

7. Nathalie Atkinson, Style Editor at The National Post: “Spicy Hotel Costes by Olivia Giacobetti, and Margiela Untitled. Sparingly, as courtesy to others in such close quarters.”

8. Lisa Tant, publisher of Hello Canada: “Calvin Klein Beauty.”

9. Crissi Giamos, Director of Public Relations for Town Shoes (sponsors of World Mastercard Fashion Week): “Jean Patou 1000. I buy it in Texas where my sister lives.”

10. Grace Lee, lead makeup artist with Fashion Week cosmetics sponsor, Maybelline: “Gucci Rush. It’s an oldie—I’m so ’90s!”

11. Cathy LeDrew, Director of Ford Models Canada: “I am A Joe Malone girl through and through. For everyday Blue Agava-Cacao is my go-to, I love its rare subtle essence. For the 5-pm refresher, I pack a Pomegranate Noir before heading to the events.”

12. Christine Faulhaber, owner of fashion-connected PR house Faulhaber Public Relations: “Lanvin Eclat d’Arpège. I got it in New York at Jeffrey’s about 10 years ago. I tried it and I couldn’t believe it. I loved it so much. It’s the only thing I wear.”

13. Lucian Matis, Toronto-based designer of the Matis and the Lucian Matis collections: “The essence of my lifestyle now is Lalique Hommage à L’Homme. I flew all the way to Paris to get it as it is not yet available in stores here in Canada.”

Deborah Fulsang has spent the last two decades as a journalist covering news and trends in the worlds of style—in fashion and beauty, design and décor, food and entertaining. Her long-held love of fragrance led her to launch The Whale & The Rose, a destination for all things perfume-related. Now, when she indulges in a crazy-expensive bottle of fragrance, she can do so guilt-free. Well almost. It’s all in the name of research after all.
