High-low: Rich, warm winter fragrances for men

When the temperatures drop, men’s scents get warm and fuzzy, woody and woozy. Which is perfect for bundling up, snuggling up and bottoms up. Here two winter fragrance picks for men.

HIGH: Atelier Cologne Tobacco Nuit

First Launched: 2016

First Impression: Spicy and smoky, like an Islay Scotch that’s been poured into a leather glass. I felt sophisticated yet sporty, like a jet-setter transported to the ski chalet via dogsled.

Top: Clementine, coriander, cumin
Middle: Tobacco blossom, labdanum, olibanum
Base: Patchouli, cedar, tonka bean

Best For: Socializing with people who are cooler than you. (It happens!)

Biggest Fan: The World’s Most Interesting Man

Atelier Cologne Tobacco Nuit, $270 (100 ml), sephora.com

LOW: Givenchy Gentlemen Only Absolute

First Launched: Summer 2016

First Impression: Ripe and heavy, almost dessert-like. Quite spicy and woody. It comes off as a weighty piece of cake topped with orange icing.

Top: Bergamot
Middle: Cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron
Base: Sandalwood, vanilla

Best For: An elegant and/or sensual evening with drinks by the fire

Biggest Fan: The man who wants to channel the face of the collection, Australian actor Simon Baker

Absolute is the latest in a string of recent Gentlemen Only fragrances launched over the past four years, including Intense, Casual Chic and Parisian Break.

Doug Wallace is a Toronto-based writer who began his fragrance wardrobe with a bottle of the now-iconic Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel and hasn’t looked back. A big fan of scents by houses Lalique and Boucheron, he is currently having a fling with all-things-British, including Clive Christian, Floris and Penhaligon’s. He treasures the dusty shoulders of some of his more aged bottles just as much as he does the shiny young ones.
